Australia’s Digital ID system

Australia’s Digital ID System provides individuals with an easier, voluntary and more secure way to verify their ID online.

We’re all familiar with handing over copies of identity documents. Whether applying for a rental or registering for a new phone plan, we’re regularly sharing or showing copies of our ID documents.  Sharing and copying your ID documents and the information on them can leave you vulnerable to identity theft. Businesses often end up with more of our data than they need, putting us at risk if a data breach occurs. Using a Digital ID can reduce the amount of information that businesses and government need to see and the number of times we share copies of our ID documents.

A Digital ID is an online method of confirming your ID that does not require physical documents once it’s set up. With your consent, Digital ID allows you to verify your existing ID documents online against the official records held by various government agencies. The government agency confirms your documents’ validity with your ID provider, only sharing what is required.

What’s changing for me?

Digital ID is already accessible through a range of accredited providers. Over the next two years there will be a roll out of additional providers and services that can access the Australia’s Digital ID System. These services will make it easier and safer for you to verify your ID online.

Using a Digital ID is voluntary, and all Commonwealth government services will remain accessible to individuals who are unable or chose not to use a Digital ID. Access these services without a Digital ID can be done the same way it currently is.
