The first Australian private company has been accredited as an identity provider to operate outside of the Australian Government’s Digital Identity System under the Trusted Digital Identity Framework (TDIF). OCR Labs, an Australian-based identity provider that offers digital identity services to the private sector, has satisfied the 262 requirements of the TDIF, following a rigorous process over four months.

Jonathan Thorpe, General Manager for Digital Identity and myGov at the Digital Transformation Agency (DTA) says that achieving accreditation means that OCR Labs have proven that users can trust that their identity information can be verified and protected by OCR Labs' identity provider.

The framework OCR Labs have been accredited under, the Trusted Digital Identity Framework, sets standards, rules and guidelines for digital identity providers and is based on international best practice and industry standards. Organisations, government agencies and private-sector businesses like OCR Labs can apply for TDIF accreditation and undergo a series of strict assurance evaluations.
To ensure that users of digital identity have confidence that their information is private and secure, the TDIF requires an organisation to meet requirements across a broad range of areas, including accessibility and usability, privacy protection, security and fraud control, risk management, technical integrity and more.
OCR Labs joins the Australian Tax Office (ATO)’s myGovID and Australia Post’s Digital iD as accredited identity providers.
OCR Labs intends to ‘step-up’ its TDIF accreditation to Identity Proofing Level 2 (IP2) Plus before the end of 2021.
Once accredited, providers need to continually demonstrate they meet their TDIF obligations by undergoing annual assessments.
